Black Adam Reshoots Costs $70 Million And Won't Make A Theatrical Profit

As part of the news that a Black Adam sequel won't be moving forward at DC Studios, a new report from The Hollywood Reporter notes that the first film won't be profitable solely from its theatrical release.

The latest report on the future of the Black Adam franchise notes that the film's $391 million box office attendance might have been enough had it not been for a number of issues, including the film's budget. Originally pegged at $190 million, the report mentions that the film's costs quickly soared to $260 million after a 20-day run of reshoots resulting from poor screening.

Marketing costs were also not included in the final tally, but due to the scale of the film's marketing, it's likely that the numbers are also quite high. That, combined with the rumored cost of $70 million for reshoots, means the film won't profit from its theatrical release alone.

While previous reports have indicated that the potential for future movies could have helped Warner Bros. Discovery to recoup that cost, with the future of the franchise now looking bleak following the changes at DC, it looks like Black Adam will only have to be seen as a disappointment for now.

While much of the future of the DCU remains a mystery, James Gunn recently announced that Cavill will step down from the role and that Gunn will write a new Superman movie. Additionally, several notable cameos have been removed from The Flash and Wonder Woman 3 is no longer in development. There are also reports that Jason Momoa will no longer be Aquaman and will be recast as another DC character.

The next DC Universe release will be Shazam! Fury of the Gods, which will be released on March 17, 2023. It will be followed by The Flash, featuring the troubled Ezra Miller, Blue Beetle and Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. The future is currently uncertain as Gunn and Safran decide on their 10-year plan for the DCU.
