'Black Panther: Wakanda Forever' Sets Disney+ Release Date

Marvel's hit sequel is set after the death of Chadwick Boseman's King T'Challa with the people of Wakanda - especially Queen Ramonda (Bassett), Princess Shuri (Wright), Nakia (Lupita Nyong'o), Okoye (Danai Gurira) and M'Baku (Winston Duke) - mourning the loss and searching for a way to may their kingdom endure.

Ahead of the premiere, "Wakanda Forever" cast members paid tribute to the late Boseman, whose the shocking death in 2020 cast an inevitable shadow over the night's celebrations.

"I'm getting ready," Wright told Variety on the mat . “I saw some members of Chad's team. When we close our eyes, we know what it feels like. We have to step aside. I see my aunt looking me in the eye, she is very proud. I have to take a step back… It's moving. We're trying to hold on."

The film caused a sensation at the box office, debuting at $181 million and snagging the second-biggest opening of the year behind "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness".

"The heroes of 'Wakanda Forever' fight for their lives, their nation, their fallen king, and the film shows us the cruelty of their dedication," Variety chief film critic Owen Gleiberman wrote in his review. "They fill the void, okay, so does Ryan Coogler in as a Marvel storyteller. T'Challa is gone, but somewhere he's smiling."
