Bob Odenkirk wanted to call Saul better to finish after his heart attack, even if they had to recast him

Having established his reputation as a really nice, down-to-earth guy over the years, it's no surprise that Bob Odenkirk takes a completely egoless view of how "Better Call Saul" should have unfolded. in the worst case scenario. If he hadn't been able to continue in the role after his medical crisis, those involved with the show - namely creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould - had no intention of moving forward if they couldn't do it with Odenkirk. Recasting Jimmy McGill/Saul Goodman/Gene Takovich would have been unthinkable...but not for the show's star.

In a behind-the-scenes clip from the upcoming Blu-ray release of the final season exclusively revealed by Fandom (IndieWire life), the "Better Call Saul" actor opened up about that traumatic day on set and his wishes for how the show would have gone on without him.

“It was a scary day for everyone there. I heard stories. I mean, I really fell, I really went gray. if I wasn't able to do it. They wouldn't have tried to continue, which hurts me! If that had happened, I wish they had found an actor to play it. Just to tell the story they had written."

Surprisingly, Odenkirk expresses concern that the wonderfully well-written story would be told to the end, even if it involved a rework. As he admits, "It wouldn't have been great, but it would have been better than nothing." It's impossible to imagine another actor stepping into such difficult circumstances to fill Odenkirk's shoes - and, thankfully, we never have to. To many, many more years with Bob Odenkirk, both on and off screen.
