The search for a missing elderly man ended tragically when his body was found in the stomach of a crocodile.

Addi Bangsa, 60, was found dead after a four-day search in Tawao, the capital of Tawau district in Sabah, Malaysia, on July 23.

The Sabah Wildlife Department (JHL) ended the combined effort when it cut open the crocodile's belly, revealing the victim's remains.

It is still unclear why the decision was made to catch and kill the crocodile to investigate possible human remains.

Tawau Fire and Rescue Station Chief Jemishin Ujin confirmed that family members of the deceased were present when the crocodile's stomach was cut open early in the morning.

The results of the examinations confirmed the identity of the victim, because all the parts of the body were found in the intestine of the animal.

Jemishin Ujin said that on the fourth day, their team was informed that the rescue team had found a male crocodile which allegedly swallowed the victim.

The animal was slaughtered around 3am on Saturday July 22 and the stomach was then split open around 9am when family members arrived.

The reptile weighed around 800 kg (126th) and was over 4 m (14 ft) long. Operations ended at 11 a.m. after the victim's body was recovered from the crocodile's stomach.
