Boosie Badazz claims the car he was driving in was pulled over and handcuffed because he's famous...but Georgia cops say the traffic stop was not a case of the PD hip hop at work.

Here's the thing: Boosie was driving a shotgun in a black Cadillac SUV when police stopped the car for heavy window tint and concealed tags. During the traffic stop, officers handcuffed the rapper...which sent Boosie into a full-blown rant against the police, at one point saying he was being targeted for being a celebrity. /p>

Fairburn Police Department Deputy Chief Anthony Bazydlo told TMZ...the officer who handcuffed Boosie said it was for the officer's safety.

We were told the police were planning to search the car, claiming it smelled like marijuana, and the chief says it's common for people to be handcuffed when cops search a car.

As for Boosie's claims that he was targeted because of his fame, Bazydlo says that's not the case...telling us that the car's temporary license plate, which allegedly was obstructed and could not be checked, was the main reason to stop it.

We are also told that the officer involved in the arrest claims that Boosie's criminal history did not play a role in his being handcuffed.
