Dozens of local government leaders have made desperate pleas for Boris Johnson to promise more money and tear up the rules so they can help vulnerable families pay their food, water bills and energy.
More than 70 labor council bosses and around 1,000 councilors across England are writing to the Prime Minister urging him to double the rules for distributing cash and scrap from the Household Support Fund ( HSF) "not suitable for use".
They say families with children are missing holiday food stamps due to government imposed rules.
Between last October and March this year, councils distributed nearly £500million in cash, vouchers and other forms of support, with over 80% of that going to families with children.
But even though energy bills are expected to triple, campaigners say the budget has not increased to meet the challenge.
Since April, councils have been told that one-third of their allocation should go to families with children and one-third to pensioners, whether or not there is a local need.
