Boris Johnson went on "shore leave" for that Britain is hurtling towards recession, Asda Conservative Chairman Stuart Rose has said in scathing remarks on the Government's response to the cost of living crisis.

The Premier minister has been accused of treating his final weeks in office as "a big party" after visiting Greece for a week - his second holiday in a fortnight.

Lord Rose has accused the government of to be “very, very slow to recognize this train coming down the tunnel” as he asked for more support from hard-hit families.

“We have to act,” the Asda boss told the show BBC Radio 4's Today. "The Captain of the ship is on shore leave, it's true - no one is in charge at the moment."

He added: "We're going to have an emergency budget, we're told . When will the real effect of this budget take place? Are we going to wait until October, November, December? Inflation is not here waiting for us."

The conservative peer said a recession was "inevitable" and argued that it was vital to "look after those who can't take the hit" - before criticizing the lack of clarity in the support plans offered by Conservative leadership candidates Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak.
