Energy crisis: Boris Johnson promises 'cash reserve'

Duckblade Prime Minister Boris Johnson today said a 'pipeline of money' was on its way to help hardened Britons through the autumn and winter, but admitted the big decisions would wait after he left.

This morning regulator Ofgem announced that the energy price cap would rise to £3,549 - a hike which it is feared will push millions of Britons into poverty and could cost thousands lives.

The government has been criticized for its failure to respond to the crisis, and ministers have yet to unveil any new measures in light of today's grim announcement.

Although some measures had already been promised by the government - before the scale of the current crisis became clear - Mr Johnson told reporters today that it would be up to his successor to draft a new response .

Charities warn, however, that this is not enough and that action must be taken now.

Management favorite Liz Truss has said there will be a contingency budget if she wins the race for 10th place, but she has not been determined how much support she will provide.

Mr. Johnson said this morning: "Of course we could see that coming, so we've put in place the measures we already have.

“While there will be more announcements to come next month, you shouldn’t forget the liquidity pipeline that stretches throughout the fall.”

He said eight million of those most at risk will get an extra £650, while in November pensioners will get £300 and £150 of support is on the way for those eligible for disability benefits .

Mr. Johnson continued, "There is a cash pipeline coming over the next few months, but this is clearly going to be augmented by additional cash which the government will clearly announce in September."

Throughout her leadership campaign, Ms. Truss has repeatedly rejected direct support, saying she does not support "handouts".
