Brazilian far-right leader Jair Bolsonaro was ousted from office after former President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva defeated him in the presidential elections.

The left-wing candidate won with 50.9% of the vote, and after being barred from running in the last presidential election in 2018 because he was in prison, it's a stunning comeback.

Mr. Lula has always proclaimed his innocence and maintained that the case against him was politically motivated.

Lula spent 580 days in prison and said, "They tried to bury me alive and here I am", launching his victory speech.

He continued, "We weren't facing an adversary, or a candidate, we were facing the entire state apparatus working against us.

"I was resurrected because they wanted to bury me alive."

"This country needs peace and unity. This population does not want to fight anymore."
