A bride was killed on her wedding day after being hit by a stray bullet fired by a guest.

Mahvash Leghaei, 24, was at a party in Firuzabad, Iran, to celebrate her big day when she was fatally shot in the head with a high-powered shotgun.

The bullet, the second of two that were fired from the weapon, reportedly pierced his skull before injuring two male participants.

The bride ended up in a coma and later died in hospital. The shooter has been identified as a 36-year-old man but has not been officially named, while local reports claim he was a cousin of the groom.

Shooting a gun to celebrate a wedding is a common custom in Iran and other parts of the Middle East, although it is illegal.

Commenting on the incident, police spokesman Col. Mehdi Jokar said: "We received an emergency call regarding a shooting at a wedding hall in Firuzabad city and officers have were immediately dispatched.

"Officers discovered that someone had fired a shotgun as part of the local nomadic tradition, but unfortunately due to the crowds and the person's poor handling of the weapon, he managed to shoot three people, two men and the bride.
