A Briton captured by Russian forces after fighting in Ukraine says he was beaten, stabbed and forced to listen to Soviet music while imprisoned in his small cell, 24 hours a day.

Aiden Aslin was one of five Britons recently released from captivity by Russian-backed forces.

He confessed he didn't think he would survive the horrific experience, but he was released on Wednesday and landed in Britain early Thursday.

Mr. Aslin detailed his torture and torment with the 28-year-old, Notts-born man, saying he had been in Ukraine for several years and was already serving in the military before the outbreak of war.

He desperately phoned his mother and his Ukrainian girlfriend before they all surrendered and said, "No matter what, I'll see you again."

But when he was captured, Mr Aslin said his captors beat him when they realized he was British. They then separated him from the others and began to interrogate him.

He was taken to the self-declared People's Republic of Donetsk, where he was beaten during interrogation before Russian-backed forces announced his capture to the world.

He said, "The officer was smoking a cigarette and knelt down in front of me to ask, 'Do you know who I am?' I said "no" and he replied in Russian: "I am your death".

"He said, 'Did you see what I did to you?'. He pointed at my back. He showed me his knife and I realized he had stabbed me.

"He then asked me, 'Do you want a quick death or a nice death?'."

Aiden asked for a quick death but said the Russian "smiled" and said it wouldn't be quick.

In July, the captured Briton was sentenced to death by a Donetsk court along with his compatriot Shaun Pinner.

During the ordeal, he described wanting to cry but not being able to...
