A British father is at risk of amputation after half of his leg was eaten by a flesh-eating insect when he was bitten by a scorpion while on vacation in Thailand.

Alan Stephenson, 73, is anxiously waiting to hear if doctors will amputate the remains of his infected limb.

The man from Hull, East Yorkshire, suffered an abnormal reaction to the bite that turned into a horrific illness that ripped skin and flesh from his leg from toe to knee.

His family now needs a flight to bring him back from a remote area of Thailand and save his leg.

Alan had traveled to Thailand to spend a few months exploring the country, but his travels were cut short by the Horror Bite.

After being bitten, he phoned his son, Kristian Stephenson, on November 9 to tell him he was in hospital and feeling increasingly unwell.

Kristian, 44, went through a difficult journey to be by his father's side in a run-down hospital miles from the nearest town.

He feared for his father's life after seeing cockroaches crawling on the hospital ceiling and stray cats eating food left for patients.

Meanwhile, Alan was in "absolute agony," Kristian said, and was so confused he couldn't remember where his visa or documents were.

Kristian said, "It was like something out of Banged Up Abroad. The conditions in the hospital were appalling and he didn't have the resources to do anything with his leg.

"I thought: he's going to die here."

Alan has diabetes, which has caused his leg to become red and swollen.
