South Africa: A man leaves his car in a wildlife reserve for fear of an elephant

A British tourist visiting a game reserve escaped an elephant by opening his car door and fleeing into a lion-infested wilderness.

Shannon Melville and his friends were parked at Hluhluwe-iMfolozi Game Reserve in South Africa as they watched the male elephant grumpily approach a car ahead.

But they were amazed at what happened next.

After this six-ton adult elephant overpowered the tourist's Toyota Camry in the 96,000 hectare safari park 225km north of Durban.

The panicked passenger weighed his options because he feared the approach of the beast.

The animal, he supposed, would attack by ramming its ivory tusks through the body of the car or crushing it under its giant feet.

That's when the passenger opened his door.

And to the astonishment of a Shannon and her group, decides to try his luck in the bush where lions, hyenas, leopards, rhinos and buffaloes roam in number.

The elephant looks perplexed because it has never seen a human running towards it.

Those filming in the car were shocked and giggled at the dilemma of the tourist leaving his vehicle for the vagaries of the bush.

The elephant is one of 200 that live in the Big 5 game reserve which also has over 120 lions, leopards, buffaloes and rhinos as well as wild packs of hyenas and African hunting dogs.< /p>

He walked away from the car keeping his eyes fixed on the fleeing tourist who hid in the bush about 50 meters from the car and decides whether to pursue him or not.
