Bruno Fernandes coaches angry Man Utd boss Ten Hag after referee rant against Arsenal

Bruno Fernandes had his work cut out in his first game as Manchester United captain. The Portuguese star had to remove his own coach Erik ten Hag from the fourth referee after the Dutchman gave him an idea.

It seems that Ten Hag's fury stems from the referees not awarding his team a penalty at halftime. But that didn't have much of an impact as Man Utd beat Arsenal 2-0 in the United States.

A record crowd of 82,262 saw United put in their best performance of their pre-season campaign to date at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Fernandes opened the scoring on the half-hour mark with a strike from outside the box that caught Aaron Ramsdale off-foot between the sticks.

Jadon Sancho then quickly doubled the Red Devils' lead seven minutes later by bouncing back from an error by Gabriel Magalhaes. To add further insult to injury, United then beat Arsenal 5-3 in a penalty shoot-out after the match.

Speaking after the match, Ten Hag praised his team's excellent performance. "I think it's very good. The way we played, I was really happy, how active we were in and out of possession," he said.

"That's how we want to play and it's the only time of year when you can really work in training and translate it into games without consequences. But we still want to win, and I think the guys showed we played a good game."

He added: "I think we did well, and we want to be like this: we want to be a pressing machine, so you have to do everything together. It's so important, and today we did it in both halves.

"Arsenal are a very good opponent. They played incredibly well last season in the Premier League, so yeah, it's good to play with them, then you will be better."

Man Utd are now set to face Wrexham on Wednesday, followed by further friendlies against Real Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Lens and Athletic Bilbao before opening their Premier League campaign against Wolves on August 14.
