Celebrate Las Mañanitas a Nuestra Virgen de Guadalupe

Las Mañanitas is a Mexican folk song traditionally sung by family and friends early in the morning to wake up the birthday person.

The mestizo, indigenous-Spanish, brunette virgin, Our Lady of Guadalupe, is not only the patroness of Mexico, she is the icon of Mexican identity. We accepted the religion of the colonizer through it.

The Virgin of Guadalupe represents the fusion of our indigenous and Spanish identities. The celebration is very important in Mexico and in the Mexican diaspora. Its significance is right there with Easter, Christmas and Mexico's Independence Day.

There is an annual pilgrimage to the Basilica of Our Lady of Guadalupe in Mexico City that approaches 10 million pilgrims.

Las mañanitas a nuestra Virgen de Guadalupe is a concert and performance by the Mexican community at St. Patrick's Cathedral in Midtown East, Manhattan on December 11, the eve of the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe.< /p> Las mananitas 2022

Las mañanitas a nuestra Virgen de Guadalupe 2021

We are not aware of a celebration at St. Patrick's Cathedral this year. Many families will celebrate at home on Saturday, December 11, 2021.

Las Mañanitas

This traditional Mexican birthday song is popular throughout the Hispanic world.

It is traditionally sung early in the morning by family and friends to wake up the birthday person. In Colombia, it is sung to girls on the morning of their quinceañera (a 15th anniversary celebration that represents the transition to womanhood).

It's a playful version of the old Hispanic tradition of courtesy in which you propose marriage by singing a song to your love under his balcony. If she lit a candle or opened the window, that meant she accepted. If the room remained dark, it meant no.

A famous version has Pedro Infante singing for La Chachita, teenage movie star Evita Muñoz in Nosotros los Pobres (1948), one of the most famous Mexican films of all time. You can see the tension in the house. The family let him in so it worked.

Las Mañanitas a Nuestra Virgen de Guadalupe

The concert celebrates the birthday of the Virgin of Guadalupe, the patroness of Mexico. We love her because like many of us, she is mixed race, a brunette Madonna.

The miracle of his appearance took place on a hill in Mexico City that was sacred to the Aztecs, so it also represents the fusion of all our traditions.

The show is a series of singing and dancing performances to an image of La Virgen de Guadalupe in front of the main altar. Many artists parade in the central aisle.

Arrive half an hour before the show to get the best seats. The seats closest to the stage are delimited, but open after the passage of the first group of artists. Get up and walk with them.

The pace can be a bit slow, but it's worth seeing the mariachis, folk dancers, and Mexican carnival characters.
