Chancellor pressures Liz Truss with appeal for help with energy bills for £45,000 workers

People earning £45,000 will need the Government aid for their skyrocketing energy bills, Chancellor says, pressuring Liz Truss to step up her plans.

The Tory leader slammed 'handouts' to ease the pain of the winter rise and is meant to foster additional support for the lowest paid only.

But Nadhim Zahawi admitted that the crisis - with average annual bills pegged at 3 £549 from October and £5,300 from January - means the next Prime Minister will have to do much more.

The Chancellor, a Truss supporter, said: 'What m worry is that he there are those who don't get benefits.

"If you're a senior nurse or teacher on £45,000 a year you have your energy b illnesses go up 80% and will probably go up even more in the new year - it's really hard.

"If you're a retiree, it's really hard. So universal credit is a really effective targeting tool, but I'm looking at what else we can do to make sure we're helping those who really need help. We are looking at all options."

Ms. Truss and Rishi Sunak refused to set out detailed policies to reduce winter energy bills, despite the price cap rising 80% to from October for many months.

The Foreign Secretary has made more than £30billion in tax cuts his flagship policy, although experts warn they will benefit massively to the very wealthy.

Mr Zahawi - who is a supporter of Ms Truss but is unlikely to be his chancellor - has drawn up a menu of options for the next prime minister who will enter in operation September 6.

Each household will receive a £400 rebate on their energy bills to be paid in installments from October, but this was announced before the 80% hike from Friday's cap.

They only include increased benefits, a loan program for suppliers and even me Labor's plans to freeze energy bills, partly funded by a bigger windfall tax on energy suppliers.

Ms Truss and Mr Sunak both rejected that approach, but t Mr Zahawi told The Daily Telegraph: 'Nothing is on the table.

'We are in a national economic emergency. It could last 18 months or even two years if Putin continues to use energy as a weapon. »
