Charlton 0-0 Brighton (4-3 pens): League One side pull off the clash to stun Seagulls on penalties

League 1 side Charlton Athletic edged Brighton & Hove Albion on penalties to reach the Carabao Cup quarter-finals.

Days after Alexis Mac Allister won the World Cup with Argentina, Brighton suffered a surprise defeat to Charlton.

Mac Allister is currently in Buenos Aires to celebrate while his Seagulls team-mates face a less attractive trip to south-east London with the return of domestic football.

And when Addicks goalkeeper Ashley Maynard-Brewer saved Moises Caicedo's penalty, Sam Lavelle hit the game-winning kick as Charlton reached the last eight, 4-3 on penalties, after a draw and blank.

These are tough times for the Addicks, with the former Premier League stalwarts now languishing 18th in League One and having appointed their fifth manager in less than two years, Dean Holden, 24 hours earlier.

They were almost behind in the opening five minutes when Lewis Dunk headed in a Solly March corner from just a bit.

Adam Lallana currently holds the position Mac Allister plays for Argentina in this Brighton side, but that will surely change once the 23-year-old returns from his break.

However, former England international Lallana almost opened the scoring in spectacular fashion when he collected the square ball from Tariq Lamptey, turned around and grazed the crossbar from 20 yards out.

But Charlton also had their chances in the first half, with Jack Payne cutting inside and firing a low shot directly at Jason Steele in the Brighton goal.

Steele then came out to bravely deny Miles Leaburn, the teenage son of former Charlton striker Carl, who had been booked for his challenge against the keeper, before Dunk slipped in to block Steven Sessegnon's shot.

Roberto De Zerbi sent on another member of his World Cup contingent, Japan winger Kaoru Mitoma, early in the second half in a bid to find some urgency.

It had an effect as Maynard-Brewer had to quickly rock Levi Colwill's header before March made a few challenges in the area to push his finish wide.

However, it remained a stalemate, and Steele looked set to be the hero of the shootout, saving George Dobson and Jes Rak-Sakyi.

But when March got hot and Caicedo's efforts were saved, Lavelle rallied to push the underdogs through.
