Bale was doing this because his character from Amsterdam, Burt Berendsen, has a lifelong passion for music and enjoys singing a capella with his army buddies Harold Woodman (John David Washington) and Valerie Voze (Margot Robbie ).

"It was a really funny scene, actually, because J.D. and I had practiced that song a bit," Bale said. "David made us sing it all day, but there were times when I would forget the lyrics. So I would look at J.D., he would look at me and then he would forget too. So, I would have to tell him. And then we We were going flat. Our pitch was all over the place, but we were like, 'Yeah, but the feeling is good!'"

Eventually, the director stepped in and decided that the only person in the scene who was actually a professional musician should sing.

"And then all of a sudden David just goes, 'What if Christian and J.D. shut up about this one and let Taylor do it?' Bale said, "And it was like we drowned out an angel's voice all day with our cacophony and our rough, terrible voices. So it's really something when you have someone with a voice as beautiful as his singing right next to you. Oh man, that was phenomenal."

“Amsterdam” hits theaters on Friday, October 7.
