Civil unrest forces Peru to restart La Liga1 behind closed doors

February 3 - The Peruvian Premier League kicks off this weekend behind closed doors after a two-week suspension due to civil unrest which reportedly claimed the lives of more than 50 people.

Peru has witnessed a wave of political protests across the country calling for the resignation of President Dina Boluarte and demanding new elections after the ousting of her predecessor Pedro Castillo.

Clashes between protesters and police represent the country's worst political violence in more than two decades.

In mid-January, the start of top-level national football was delayed "to prevent and avoid risks that affect the safety and physical integrity of people".

With the cancellation of the first two rounds of matches, the league will now start with the third day "which will be played without spectators on the recommendation of the authorities"said the Peruvian Federation (LFP)< / p>

In a separate dispute, the Elite are embroiled in a broadcast rights controversy.
