Concacaf to launch first regional women's club competition in 2024

April 26 – Concacaf has pledged to set up its first international competition for women's clubs with a start date of 2024.

Concacaf said the competition will be the "only" route to the Women's Club World Cup competition announced by FIFA last December.

UEFA and Conmebol both run women's club competitions which are quickly becoming established, and the AFC have run test events with the aim of moving to a regional women's club competition. While Concacaf has frequently dominated women's football and revamped its competition schedule for women's national teams, the new club competition will fill a gap in its portfolio.

The decision was taken by the Concacaf Board at a meeting on Tuesday.

Two of the Concacaf nations, the United States and Mexico, have growing professional women's leagues (NWSL and Liga MX Femenil) while Canada is pushing towards a professional club set up either by professional teams. either by a proposed new club league.

With most Concacaf nations drawing their players from the national club team and domestic competitions (Concacaf has six nations qualified for this summer's Women's World Cup), an international club competition is a clear next step to develop women's football and local talent.

Concacaf said details will be released later this year once more information becomes available on the format and slot allocation for the new Women's Club World Cup. Concacaf has revamped its Women's National Team schedule for 2021-24 with new competitions for the Women's National Team including the Concacaf W Qualifiers and W Championship, as well as the upcoming Road to W Gold Cup and inaugural Concacaf W Gold Cup which is scheduled for February and March 2024. .
