Cost of living crisis: wages plunge at record pace as bills soar

IndyEat

Real wages have fallen at a record pace between April and June as Britain's cost of living crisis took hold and inflation reduced the value of workers' wages, according to official figures. last quarter compared to the previous year. Regular pay fell 3%, according to the Office for National Statistics.

Wages rose in monetary terms, but were eclipsed by soaring costs for gas, electricity, fuel, food and other goods that pushed headline inflation to 9.4%.

Private sector workers saw their wages increase by 5.9% before inflation, more than three times faster than their public sector counterparts who enjoyed a 1.8% increase.

The figures put the government on track for further clashes with civil servants, including nurses, doctors, lawyers and teachers, who have seen the value of their earnings plummet this year, adding to the pain of a decade of falling real wages.
