Overwhelmed food banks are unable to cope with unprecedented demand and are forced to turn away families in the need as more and more people experience hardship due to the cost crisis of life in the UK.

Several officials told The Independent they were forced to have a "painful" discussion about the maximum number of people they could help because they lacked food this summer.

A coalition of 70 charities has urged Conservative leadership candidates - Liz Truss and Rishi Sunak - to more than double the level of emergency aid to low-income families to avoid a 'disaster' this winter, as Labor joined the Liberal Democrats in calling for the energy price cap to be frozen.

Meanwhile, Labor presented its £29bn plan pounds to avoid a rise in household energy bills, saying it would be partly funded by extending the windfall tax on oil and gas companies.

And a new poll on leaders Tory suggests that many Tory members would still prefer Boris Johnson over either candidate to replace him.
