Starbucks has gotten a big boost from the locals of Stroud, famous for its downtown independent traders and the birthplace of Extinction Rebellion.

Locals are angry that the global coffee chain is entering a new facility funded by the state containing a health center and a library. The building is the city's former Woolworths.

Stroud, which has a population of 120,000, already has an internationally branded cafe, with a Costa and the residents say "one is enough".

The only local to welcome in the new Starbucks was a busker wearing a jester, greeting customers with Fool on the Hill in the August sun. But locals and day-trippers said they would avoid Starbucks and stick to independent cafes to keep their hard-earned money in the local economy.
