Arriving with his team 44-3 after being asked to bat, Foakes led the recovery past the England manager. Rob Key cricketer.

He hit for nearly four hours, sharing positions of 87 with Jamie Smith (54) and 75 with Cameron Steel.

Foakes' innings ended with a brilliant hold from Colin de Grandhomme, but Steel continued until at the end 86 not eliminated as Surrey finished on 340-7.

Lancashire had inflicted Surrey's only loss of 2022 by finishing second behind them and they had the visitors under pressure after new captain Keaton Jennings won the draw and placed them on a cold Manchester morning.

Captain Rory Burns was caught for one, England number three Ollie Pope made 13 and Ryan Patel was fired for four as new pair of balls Will Williams and Tom Bailey made early breakthroughs.

Dom Sibley stayed until just before lunch in his first match for Surrey since returning from Warwickshire before leaving for 35 to leave side 77-4.

Foakes batted at five, two places above his place in the England order, but rather than the Bazball-style gung-ho favored by the Test team, he needed to dig for his county.

His last appearance at Old Trafford produced an unreleased Test-best 113 last summer against South Africa after going that day at 147-5 and he underlined his ability to beat well in a difficult situation.
