The New Zealand international, who has a three-match contract with County , provided immediate value with a smooth 106 step out knock that guided them to 248-5 at the close, behind Surrey by 107.

Young shared a 134 second-wicket partnership with Haseeb Hameed, who hit 67, while Surrey's Jamie Overton took two wickets when he returned to bowling for the first time this summer after recovering from a back injury.

The home side had previously recorded 355 all- out in his opening run, with Nottinghamshire all-rounder Lyndon James collecting the last two wickets to record a career-best 6-74.

Recovering at 339 for eight a.m., Surrey increased their tally by another 16 - all those scored by Overton, who bludgeoned a six and two fours from Dane Paterson to finish on 30 steps.

Overton's effort was enough to earn a third bonus point at bat before James wrapped up quickly up the innings claiming the scalps of Tom Lawes and Dan Worrall in successive deliveries.

Nottinghamshire Openers dug early in their response, with Worrall and Sean Abbott playing a consistent line and the latter also found a move to dislodge Ben Slater, caught by Tom Latham on the second slide.

Having survived a first scare when he cut Abbott just above the slipline, Hameed settled into a clean punch game as he was sending Jordan Clark to the limit twice in quick succession.
