Crickets batsman Jerry Allison dies aged 82

Jerr y Allison, whose drumming powered Buddy Holly's influential rock and roll hits, has died aged 82.

As part of The Crickets, Allison co-wrote songs like That 'll Be The Day and Peggy Sue, earning her a place in the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame.

His death was announced on Buddy Holly's official Facebook page on Monday.

The statement honored Allison as a "musician ahead of his time". No date or cause of death has been given.

"Our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Crickets Batsman Jerry 'JI' Allison , one of Buddy's closest friends and inspiration to drummers for decades, who passed away today at the age of 82," the post read.

"I was a musician ahead of his time, and no doubt his energy, ideas and exceptional talent contributed to both the Crickets and to rock n' roll itself, becoming such a hit.

"Buddy is often heralded as the original singer-songwriter, but JI also has wrote and inspired so many songs that would go on to be eternal classics."
