“Dalíland” trailer: Ezra Miller plays a young Salvador Dalí in the biopic

Ezra Miller and Ben Kingsley are two sides of the same Dalí.

The two actors transform into artist Salvador Dalí for Magnolia Pictures' "Dalíland", directed by Mary Harron ("American Psycho", "I Shot Andy Warhol").

The film focuses on Salvador Dalí, one of the most famous artists of the 20th century, and focuses on the last years of the strange and fascinating marriage between Dalí and his wife, Gala (Barbara Sukowa), then as their unshakable bond begins to stress and fracture, according to an official synopsis. Set in New York and Spain in 1974, the film is told through the eyes of James (Christopher Briney), a young assistant eager to make a name for himself in the art world, who helps the eccentric and fickle Dalí to prepare for a major gallery exhibition. Suki Waterhouse, Andreja Pejic and Rupert Graves, stars of "Daisy Jones & the Six".

"Dalíland" made its closing night debut at TIFF 2022 and is produced by Daniel Brunt, Chris Curling, Edward R. Pressman, Sam Pressman and David O. Sacks.

Director Harron addressed the controversies surrounding actor Miller. The non-binary star who uses the pronouns them/them was arrested for felony trespassing; allegations that Miller smothered a woman and ran a "cult" community for teens were also made public. Miller apologized and announced that they were seeking mental health treatment.

Harron shared that Miller had been on his mind for over a decade to play the role of a young Dalí.

"At that time, the producers and everybody were like, 'Well, you can't cast them because they're not a big enough star,'" Harron told Vanity Fair. then a year later they were too big a star and had to drop out because they got 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them', then later they got 'The Flash'."

Harron added, "They've been very loyal to the project for years, even when other people left and right gave up due to schedule changes and the pandemic."

Regarding the charges against Miller, Harron said, "They were very professional and nice to everyone. There were no problems or signs of trouble on set. So it was very upsetting. and terrible to read what happened later. Reading this stuff was very sad - very sad for everyone involved. Hope they get some help for what feels like a very, very broken up very serious."

"Dalíland" is out June 9 in select theaters and on VOD.
