Daniel Farke frustrated with retaken penalty as Salford knock Leeds out of EFL Cup

Leeds boss Daniel Farke was unhappy with the winning shot on goal retaken as Leeds suffered a dramatic 9-8 penalty shootout loss to Salford in the Carabao Cup.

Ossama Ashley scored on the second attempt after Karl Darlow stopped an early effort only to be shown a yellow card for leaving his line.

Farke said: "It was the only penalty to retake, but I can't change the referee's decision."

Despite almost complete dominance by Leeds, the Ammies led at the break thanks to a header from former Elland Road striker Matt Smith.

Leeds skipper Pascal Struijk equalized with 14 minutes to go but they couldn't find a winner and Georginio Rutter and Jamie Shackleton missed as all the outfield players stepped up shots on goal.

Farke said, "It's disappointing, but we have to come to terms with the loss.

"We hit the bar and the post, and had plenty of chances to put the ball in the back of the net, but we didn't and we need to improve on that.

"It's not up to me to punish or accuse anyone after leaving this competition: it's just one of those days. »

Salford boss Neil Wood has urged his players to gain confidence in their latest scalp.

After beating Preston on penalties in the first round, the League Two Ammies went the distance again.

Wood said: "We really had to work hard, especially defensively, so it's a big credit to the guys for that.

"There were times when we had to defend our lives and then once it happened on penalties, it could really go either way.

"We've been there before, so the guys know to just stay focused and hope for a bit of luck.

“We made it, we qualified, but we earned the right to participate in the draw for the third round.

"It's great to test yourself against teams in the Championship, so the guys must take a lot of confidence from this win."
