David Beckham finally addresses Qatar promotion deal in statement to comedian Joe Lycett

In August, he appeared in a 30-minute promotional video highlighting some of the landmarks and sights in Qatar's capital, Doha. Beckham was dubbed an icon within the LGBTQ+ community in 2002 when he became the first Premier League footballer to grace the cover of gay magazine Attitude. However, his status as an ally was questioned after his involvement with Qatar came to light.

Human rights activist Peter Tatchell, who traveled to Qatar to stage a protest and was arrested by five police officers, has offered his thoughts on Beckham's partnership with Qatar. "Although Qatar is a sexist, homophobic and racist dictatorship, they would have described it as 'perfection,'" he said. “Beckham was once an LGBT+ ally and icon, but no more. He took his 30 silver coins. Putting money before principles, he seems driven solely by pure greed."

Qatar also responded to Lycett with a statement. "Everyone is welcome in Qatar," Lycett read in the statement. "Our track record has shown that we have warmly welcomed all people, regardless of their background." Sponsors McDonald's and Budweiser did not respond when Lycett asked for comment.
