De Jong is one of many midfielders linked with Liverpool after Klopp's transfer U-turn

Jurgen Klopp admits he was 'wrong' about the need for midfield reinforcements, with Barcelona's Frenkie de Jong emerging as one of Liverpool's top targets.

Fingers are pointed at Klopp's midfield following the club's torrid start to the season.

The defeat at Manchester United on Monday leaves the Reds looking for their first Premier League victory of the season.

James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Harvey Elliott started at Old Trafford with Thiago, Curtis Jones and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain all injured.

Liverpool wrapped up their summer transfer business very quickly, bringing in Fabio Carvalho, Darwin Nunez and Calvin Ramsay for a total of £74million.

Klopp had previously said the club was finished on the market and would no longer bring in new faces, however, the German manager has backtracked, revealing that Liverpool 'need a midfielder'.< /p>

"I was the one who said we don't need a midfielder, you were right and I was wrong," he told reporters on Friday.

"This specific point does not change - if we do something, it has to be the right one.

"As you can imagine, we're constantly working on this stuff, and there are reasons why sometimes it doesn't happen - sometimes too expensive, sometimes not the right player - but then the situation change."

Unsurprisingly, many names are now linked with a move to Anfield.

Earlier this week, Spanish outlet Futbol Total claimed that Liverpool are interested in Barcelona midfielder and Manchester United target Frenkie de Jong.

And a report from the Mirror says there are some "interesting suggestions" in the 25-year-old Netherlands international.

The same report links the Reds to Brighton midfielder and fellow Manchester United target Moises Caicedo, although Albion are reluctant to sell.

Unsurprisingly, Jude Bellingham is mentioned, but it is once again reiterated that Borussia Dortmund have no interest in selling the Englishman this summer.

Paris Saint-Germain's Leandro Paredes is 'perhaps too old' at the ripe old age of 28 to be considered by Klopp, while Lyon's Houssem Aouar was a prime target for Liverpool, but it would be a surprise to see him join the Merseyside club.

90min threw RB Leipzig midfielder Konrad Laimer and Wolves playmaker Ruben Neves into the mix.

Laimer has entered the final 12 months of his contract and hopes to join Bayern Munich this month or as a free agent next summer.

The Austrian would be a cheaper alternative to Neves, who could cost between £50m and £100m.

Speaking last week, Leipzig CEO Oliver Mintzlaff insisted Laimer would likely stay at the club this summer.

"I guess Konny will stay. But the transfer window is still open and we still have a few conversations," Mintzlaff said.

"The trend is very, very big for him to stay with us."
