The beleaguered Rishi Sunak has been called 'desperate and pathetic' after he made a false claim that Labor sided with 'criminal gangs'.

The Prime Minister - who is under pressure to settle a huge asylum backlog and deliver on his promise to stop the boats - has been criticized for his clumsy attempt to deflect blame onto Labour.

Labour's Shadow Immigration Minister Stephen Kinnock called it "desperate tricks from a desperate prime minister out of ideas".

It comes after the Daily Mail alleged that several lawyers agreed to help an undercover journalist posing as an economic migrant to submit a bogus claim in return for thousands of pounds.

Mr. Kinnock said Labor had asked the Solicitors Regulation Authority to launch an urgent inquiry into the "despicable rogue lawyers".

The row erupted after Mr Sunak shared the story on Twitter, writing: 'This is what we are up against.

"The Labor Party, a subset of lawyers, criminal gangs - they are all on the same side, supporting an operating system that profits from illegally sending people to the UK. I have a plan to end it."
