Dominic Cummings wants Boris Johnson out of No 10 by police as Tories demand he leave today

The Tories are calling on Boris Johnson to quit Number 10 immediately rather than stay on as caretaker prime minister - as Dominic Cummings called on police to 'escort him out of the building' today.

The Prime Minister is expected to announce his resignation shortly after being abandoned by his party, with more than 50 ministers resigning since Tuesday evening.

But he appears to be planning to remain caretaker prime minister until the fall, with a No. 10 official saying he would make new appointments to his ministerial team soon.

Embittered ex-assistant Mr Cummings said letting Mr Johnson stay on as caretaker would cause 'carnage' and told Cabinet to order him out today.

He tweeted: 'Cabinet ministers should talk to Brady this morning, accept Raab as caretaker Prime Minister, then talk to the Cabinet Secretary and ask him to sort out the problem with Palace...

"Tell [PM] you quit and leave today or the queen will fire, appoint Raab and the cops will escort you out of the building. [PM] will fold Game over."

He added: "Evict TODAY or he will cause CARNAGE, even now he is playing for time and will try to stay. No 'dignity', no 'interim during the leadership race'. Raab is expected to be caretaker prime minister in the evening."

Mr Johnson's departure will spark a Tory leadership race that could last for weeks over the summer.

The format of the competition is in the hands of the 1922 Conservative backbench committee, which sets the rules.

Theresa May remained PM while the competition to name her successor unfolded in 2019.

But some Tories have expressed concern about Mr Johnson staying on as Ms May has been forced to quit
