Dutch police open investigation into attacks by AZ Alkmaar fans on families of West Ham players

May 19 - Dutch police have launched an investigation after families and friends of West Ham players were attacked in the Conference League semi-final against AZ Alkmaar.

West Ham progressed to the third-tier European Cup final after claiming a 3-1 aggregate victory in the Netherlands, with Pablo Fornals' late goal sealing their victory.

However, the aftermath of the match was marred by alarming scenes, as AZ Alkmaar fans clashed with West Ham players, fans and stewards. Furious West Ham players were also seen jumping into the fray trying to defend their families as Michail Antonio and Flynn Downes jumped over the billboards. Lucas Paqueta was also seen among those involved in the scuffles.

In a statement on Friday, Dutch police said no arrests have yet been made, but are reviewing footage from the stadium and trying to identify the culprits.

"Arrests may follow," police said in a statement. "Together with AZ, the municipality of Alkmaar and the public prosecutor's office, we will assess the incidents of last night, which we regret to have taken place. This kind of behavior has no place in football."

The UEFA Disciplinary Body may also review images and reports from the AFAS Stadium and decide on further action.

In the Conference League final on June 7 in Prague, West Ham will face Italian side Fiorentina, who eliminated Basel 4-3 on aggregate.
