Elon Musk said he would step down as Twitter CEO when he finds someone who is "dumb enough to take the job" after winning a majority in a poll he conducted wanted him to resign

Elon Musk has confirmed that he will step down as CEO of Twitter as soon as he finds someone "stupid enough to take the job".

The Tesla and SpaceX boss said he plans to stay on as CEO of Twitter until he finds someone willing to replace him.

Musk's announcement came after millions of Twitter users asked him to step down in a poll the billionaire himself created and promised to stick to.

Over 57% of users who voted in the poll wanted him to quit in last Sunday's poll.

"I will step down as CEO as soon as I find someone stupid enough to take the job!" Musk tweeted on Tuesday. "After that, I'll just lead the software and server teams."

Since taking over Twitter in late October, Musk's run as CEO has been marked by quickly released rules and policies that were often withdrawn or changed soon after being made public.

He has also alienated some investors in his electric vehicle company Tesla, who fear Twitter is taking too much of his attention.

Some of Musk's actions have baffled Twitter advertisers and put off users. They include laying off half of Twitter's workforce, firing contract content moderators, and disbanding a council of trust and safety advisors the company formed in 2016 to combat abuse. hate speech, child exploitation, suicide, self-harm and other issues on the platform. /p>

There was also the failed rollout of subscription service Twitter Blue, and some advertisers suspended spending with the company over concerns about its "absolute free speech" approach.
