Emmys network scorecard: HBO leads 2022 nominations, comfortably overtaking Netflix in second place

Last year was a tumultuous awards season for Netflix. After missing out on the morning crown of Emmy nominations, the streaming service took home the most trophies at the end of the season in September. If Netflix wants to repeat, the battle will be even tougher this time around. Standing in their way is perennial rival HBO, which landed 140 nominations on HBO and HBO Max on Tuesday morning.

HBO didn't quite hit the "second and third place combined" numbers, but it remains the clear leader after the nominations ended. Netflix was the only other service to reach triple digits, hitting 105. Depending on how you assess the breadth of distribution, that's an average of 3 nominations across 35 projects, compared to an average of nearly 6 across all 24 series. Rounding up the numbers for Hulu, Disney+, Fox, FX and ABC, the Disney TV family is gearing up for a good morning. Buoyed by a surprising screening of the limited series "Dopesick," Hulu finished in third place overall with 58. Disney+'s 34 total nominations are a bit down, lacking the dual power of "WandaVision." and "The Mandalorian," which alone accounted for 47 last year.

The rest of the stream is the usual mixed bag. "Severance" and "Ted Lasso" took Apple TV+ to 50, continuing the platform's upward trajectory. With the help of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel," Prime Video has enjoyed a mild resurgence, rebounding to its 2020 total of 30 after barely half that total last year. Paramount+ made further gains, steadily moving into the double digits, while Peacock's only 3 nominations came for "Angelyne".

Traditionally a top broadcast network due to the largesse of "Saturday Night Live", 2022 saw NBC return to the pack, with CBS and ABC both improving their shows. CBS tied NBC's total thanks to its live programming (five names each for an Adele special and the Grammys, among others).

Final round voting for the Emmys will begin on August 12, 2022 and will continue until 10:00 p.m. PT on August 22. The 74th Primetime Emmy Awards will air Monday, September 12, 2022 on NBC.
