Energy bills: A simple change to your boiler settings could save you £112 a year

Millions of Britons are being urged to simply change their boiler settings, which could save them £112 a year.

The Nesta and Which? launched a campaign with energy companies EDF, E.ON Next and Octopus to reduce rising bills this winter.

Nesta advises that users of gas combi boilers should set it to a "flow temperature" of 60°C or less, in order to use the gas as efficiently as possible.

But many boilers run hotter than that, which uses more gas as heat is lost through the pipes in your home.

Research has shown that many people are unaware that they can reduce their bill by lowering the temperature of the boiler.

While the majority of people have lowered their thermostat, ONS data shows that only 1 in 10 people have lowered the flow temperature of their boiler in the past year.

Energy group Nesta has claimed that if 10 million homes with combi boilers reset their flow temperature to 60C it would cut costs by £1billion

The boiler flow temperature is different from your thermostat.

It's usually controlled by a dial or buttons on the front of the boiler - you can see exactly what to do by visiting.

People who run their boiler at a lower temperature will need to leave the heater on longer to heat their home — around 15 minutes, Nesta said.

But research for the charity found that despite this, lowering the starting temperature from 80C to 60C can save 9% of total gas consumption, or £112 for a average house.
