England captain Harry Kane in tears after missed penalty sees France progress at World Cup

England captain Harry Kane was in tears after missing a crucial penalty against France at the World Cup on Saturday night. The Three Lions came up short against the defending champions and lost 2-1 as they were heartbreakingly eliminated from the tournament in the quarter-finals.

Kane has usually been England's main man in front of goal in recent years and took his second spot-kick of the night in the 84th minute after already converting from 12 yards earlier in the game.< /p>

The Tottenham striker was lucky enough to become the Three Lions' top scorer and overtake Wayne Rooney's tally of 53 goals after leveling the former Manchester United ace half an hour earlier. But he pushed his effort over the crossbar as Gareth Southgate's side were dismissed by the Blues.

And after the match, Kane was consoled by a whole host of his teammates as tears streamed down his face.

The game started off frantically as both teams looked to assert their authority and break the deadlock. And it was France who delivered the first blow as Aurélien Tchouameni curled a sumptuous effort into the bottom corner from 25 yards.

The goal proved controversial as the Three Lions felt Bukayo Saka was fouled by Dayot Upamecano during the build-up. But the strike was cleared as France took a one-goal lead in the interval.

England equalized nine minutes after the break as Kane came from the penalty spot after Saka was knocked down. But France retook the lead 12 minutes from time as former Arsenal and Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud headed in following a magnificent delivery into the box from Antoine Griezmann, who clinched his second assist of the evening.

The Southgate side then had the chance to equalize for the second time in the game when Mason Mount was brought into the penalty area. But Kane couldn't keep his composure when he presented himself with another opportunity from 12 yards.

England kept pushing forward in hopes of forcing extra time as the seconds ticked away. But they failed to force their way through the French defense for the second time as the Blues secured a semi-final showdown with Morocco. France lifted the trophy in Russia four years ago after defeating Croatia in the final. And they will now be confident of going all the way in Qatar once again.
