Euro U21: Germany eliminated while England maintain their record at 100%

June 29 - Germany's young talent followed the same path as the senior World Cup squad when they were knocked out of the European Under-21 Championship in the group stage.

The defending champions were beaten 2-0 by England who made it three out of three wins in Batumi, Georgia with two goals in the opening 21 minutes from Cameron Archer and Harvey Elliott.

While the Germans will regret taking just a single point in the group stage, the first time in 10 years that they failed to reach the knockout stage, England can now hope to face Portugal in the quarter-finals on Sunday.

England coach Lee Carsley hailed the forward showing at his side. "We were lucky to try our luck," he said. "Germany had some very good chances but didn't take them. We're really happy with the result, but above all with the performance.

"We thought it was a really difficult match. We knew the preparation for the match was going to be difficult. We had the chance to face Germany in one of the international windows in a friendly. We knew the quality they had. Tactically they are very difficult to break down and you saw that in the game today."
