EXCLUSIVE: Rimowa Creates Design Award

ON THE MOVE: Rimowa is the latest luxury brand to launch a design award, with the competition inaugural university students in German schools to address the topic of mobility.

Loved for its grooved aluminum wheeled suitcases, the Cologne-based company says students are "encouraged to freely interpret the theme by creating designs that both consider the overall impact of mobility and recognize Rimowa's principles of resilience, excellence and quality."

Winners will be selected by a panel of experts and announced in April with the grand prize winner pocketing 20,000 euros, the runner-up 10,000 euros and three others offered 5,000 euros. Finalists will also benefit from a mentorship program led by one of the jurors.

The jury consists of Rimowa President Alexandre Arnault and General Manager Hugues Bonnet-Masimber; Manuel Goller, founder and creative director of New Tendency; interior and furniture designer Gesa Hansen; Mateo Kries, director of the Vitra Design Museum; industrial designer Julia Läufer of Läufer & Keichel; Mike Meiré, creative director, and Julius Wiedemann, chief curator of the online platform Domestika.

Rimowa noted that the annual award will also provide participants with various networking opportunities, workspaces and other supports to bring projects to life.

"It is increasingly important for us to support and nurture the next generation who will shape the future legacy of German Design,” Bonnet-Masimbert commented, noting that students would also tackle “global issues that will affect how the world navigates design in the future.”

Among the 15 participating universities are the National Academy of Fine Arts in Stuttgart, the University of arts Folkwang de Essen, Anhalt University of Applied Sciences, Muthesius Academy of Art in Kiel and Deggendorf Institute of Technology.

Rimowa is controlled by LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton, sponsor of an annual award for young designers of fashion. Loewe, which is also part of the French luxury group, is spearheading an annual craftsmanship award.
