Five German stars alongside Mead in Women's Euro Tournament team

Germany topped the team of the tournament for Women's Euro 2022 despite losing 2-1 to England in the Wembley final on Sunday.

Both teams had won every match en route to a much-anticipated decider at England's National Stadium in front of a record crowd for a European Championship match of 87,192.

A Chloe Kelly extra time victory proved the difference as the Lionesses clinched their first major title, handing their German rivals their first loss in nine Women's Euro finals.

Beth Mead was sent off in the final but had still done enough to be named Player of the Tournament, also edging the top scorer award for assists ahead of Alexandra Popp - who missed the match through injury in warming up.

Still, there was room for both superstars on the official tournament team.

Mead was one of four England players, with goalkeeper Mary Earps, captain Leah Williamson and midfield pass master Keira Walsh each also credited.

Meanwhile, Germany had five players included; along with Popp, defenders Giulia Gwinn and Martina Hegering made the cut, as did young player of the tournament Lena Oberdorf.

Next to Mead and Popp in the top three was Klara Buhl, although the coronavirus kept her out of the semis and final.

France were beaten by Germany in the last four and were represented by defender Sakina Karchaoui, while Spain lost to both finalists but still allowed Aitana Bonmati into the starting XI .
