Mandarin oranges are providing a much-needed source of income for South Australian citrus growers in the midst of a tough season.

With flooding affecting many parts of the east coast, Mandarins from the Riverland region have filled supermarket shelves across the country.

Helen Aggeletos, general manager of Venus Citrus said demand has exceeded supply.

"Mandarin orange volumes have generally been lower this year, both in Queensland and in the southern states as well, with the exception of the Afourer variety," she said.

"Basically we pack as much as possible.

"The only time there was a dip was during school holidays, because tangerines are a bit of a lunchbox fruit."

The high demand for fruit was fortuitous as it came after 14 outbreaks of fruit fly infestation in the Riverland and disruptions in the shipping industry.

Thus, Venus Citrus was able to redirect tangerines to the domestic market.

Ms Aggeletos said that tangerines also escaped the degradation. on of the albedo that unusually cold conditions had caused in the oranges, making the skin softer and able to rot more easily.

"[The tangerines have] been good, and c is probably one of the bright spots in the scheme of things," she said.

Citrus General Manager Australia's Nathan Hancock said the cold weather helped boost sales.

"Of all the fruits that exist at this time of year, there are many [ citrus fruit] for Australian consumers," he said.

"And it's also very closely associated with boosting your immune system during the winter."
