The prospect of inflation rising above 18% should sound alarm bells within the government.

Without urgent action, households across the country face a winter of fear and misery.

Such a high inflation rate will cause prices to skyrocket, pushing more families into dire straits.

The poorest will be the hardest hit, as they spend more of their income on food and heating.

It's bad enough that we don't have a functioning government that can step in now, but it's even worse that none of the prime minister candidates have a plan that comes close to scale of the crisis.

Favourite Liz Truss thinks tax cuts are the answer, although her proposal would only improve 76p for the poorest families while giving the richest £93 a month.< /p>

The Tories should follow Labor's lead and freeze the cap on energy costs.

This would protect people from punitive bill hikes and help lower inflation.
