Ian Khama backs campaign to ban trophy hunting

A former African president today urged British MPs to ban imports of hunting trophies.

Ian Khama, who led Botswana from 2008 to 2018, has called on British voters to pressure their MPs to support a bloc.

He sent a video to the campaign to ban trophy hunting, supporting his fight to stop hunters bringing their sick memories back to Britain.

The request comes as MPs prepare for a Commons vote on the measure, due later this month.

In the 71-second film, Mr. Khama holds up a model elephant and says: "Later this November, British MPs will debate a bill to ban the importation of hunting trophies.

“There has been a huge decline in the number of wild animals around the world, and a major contributor to this rapidly diminishing gem of nature is the slaughter of many species just for the sake and pleasure of inflicting death to the wonderful creatures of our planet. .

"This is done by hunters in the UK, among others."

He adds: "Please ask your MP to support the bill that will come to Parliament and put an end to this cruelty, slaughter, greed and massive destruction of nature. Thank you. "

The Tory's long-promised ban would finally stop hunters bringing animal skins, severed heads and carcasses back to Britain after being shot overseas.

Hopes of an imminent ban were rekindled in May when a section of the Queen's Speech dossier outlining the government's priorities read: 'We are committed to passing legislation banning the import of trophies hunting thousands of species."

But there was no timeline indication.
