I love snow. Very few things make me more excited than waking up to see a cool white blanket on the rooftops and hearing that special silence of the city after a snowfall.

Skiing? Not really. My only experience of this sport was when I was 13 years old. A trip on a T-bar lift and I descended the slope swearing never to do it again.

This time I was heading for Arosa in Switzerland for a break without skiing. I opted to travel by train - a 13 hour journey from London, via Paris and Zurich, with the final leg on a small local train up into the hills.

It was only on this last part of the trip that the snow finally emerged.

Like many European ski resorts this winter, Arosa suffered from scattered snowfall, but when I arrived at the Tschuggen Grand Hotel, the flakes were accumulated.
