Penalty heartbreak as Harry Kane's miss sends England off

Hugo Lloris admitted he had mixed emotions after France reached the semi-finals of the World Cup.

France goalkeeper Lloris said he 'shared this moment of pain' with Tottenham team-mate Harry Kane after his missed penalty in the quarter-finals. Lloris is on course to become the first captain to win back-to-back World Cups but said he still felt sympathy for Kane and offered his support.

Tottenham goalkeeper Lloris said: "Of course we're happy because it's a key moment. But the man I am is saddened because he's a teammate I've known for a long time, a a man I greatly respect and someone who took responsibility at an important time.

"Unfortunately for him and the England team, he did it again and fortunately for the France team, because it was a turning point.

"I know he is strong and will win, but I can only share this moment of pain with him. The English team put in a great performance and the French players deserve to be congratulated."

Lloris seemed annoyed by some of the criticism and tough questions thrown at him during the tournament as he walked through the mixed zone interview area complaining, "Now you want words."< /p>

But he remains one of the best goalkeepers in the world and could be the most decorated captain in France's history. Lloris added: “We have to savor this moment in the dressing room. It's a big moment. It's England. We have done a very good job. French players deserve the credit. We must prepare for the next battle."
