A group of horrified hikers discovered that their friend had disappeared after hearing her screams as she fell 300 meters from a mountain.

Mariacristina Masocco, 26, from the town of Feltre, Italy, died when she fell off the edge of a cliff while climbing Punta del Comedon in the Dolomites on Sunday.

She had preceded the group on their descent from the 7,600ft summit after reaching the summit around 4 p.m., with the other three staying together at a location behind her.

But soon after, they were suddenly alerted by the sounds of her screams and rocks sliding, Italian newspaper Il Gazzettino reported this week.

Quickly going to the source of the sound, the friends began calling after they were unable to locate Mariacristina - only to hear the silence.

A short time later they called emergency services and a helicopter soon discovered his body lying on a ledge under a cliff.

Difficult weather conditions prevented rescuers from reaching Mariacristina's body until the next day, when they took three of her friends to the scene.
