The category winners and shortlisted entries for the Sony World Photography Awards 2024 open competition have been revealed - and the images submitted are as extraordinary as ever.

< p class="mol-para-with-font">The prestigious competition holds several competitions each year, with more than 395,000 photographs from more than 220 countries and territories entered into this year's overall awards.

Standout images from the Open competition include a New Mexico scene that could be an alien planet, a burning moonrise on the horizon in Scotland, and a curious capybara – the biggest rodent of the world - wandering around the kitchen. of a house in the Amazon rainforest.

Other particularly fascinating photos that wowed the judges include a photo of a jaguar attacking a caiman alligator, a photo of a polar bear wandering past a group of walruses and a haunting image of llamas shrouded in freezing fog in southern Chile's iconic Torres del Paine mountains.
