As the dust settles, reality grows. Lionel Messi is world champion. Argentina beat France in the biggest ever World Cup final at the Lusail Iconic Stadium on Sunday, lifting that impressive trophy for the third time. And there are plenty of reactions to take in as the return of club football looms on the horizon.

Messi opened the scoring from the penalty spot after 23 minutes before Angel di Maria completed a scintillating counterattack to add a second in the first half. Argentina were on speed control as France only managed to put in a shot midway through the second period.

But Lionel Scaloni's side were stunned late in the game, with Kylian Mbappe netting a penalty himself and then a superb volley in the space of a minute to level the score from nowhere. Messi thought he had won it in the second half of extra time before Mbappe completed his hat-trick with another kick two minutes from time, sending him into a shootout.

Other heroics from Emi Martinez saw him save Kingsley Coman's penalty before successfully winning a mental game with Aurelien Tchouameni, who fired wide. Gonzalo Montiel scored the winner of Argentina's clean sheet victory on penalties, sparking wild celebrations in Qatar and around the world.

Aguero fires back

Sergio Aguero has hit back after receiving criticism on Twitter following footage from a live stream where he appeared to call Eduardo Camavinga a 'face of ***'. The 34-year-old played a starring role in Argentina's World Cup celebrations despite retiring from football in 2021, but insisted his comment on the French midfielder was only a joke

Aguero live-streamed some of Argentina's post-match dressing room celebrations and appeared to call Camavinga a "shitty face", which drew criticism online.

But the Argentine legend has now hit back at critics by clarifying his comments.

Bayern press release after Coman's racist abuse

French star Kingsley Coman suffered racist abuse with Aurélien Tchouameni and Randal Kolo Muani after their World Cup final loss to Argentina.

The Bayern winger and Tchouameni both missed penalty kicks during the shoot-out while Muani fended off a golden chance to win the game late in the second half of extra time.

And after the trio were subjected to vile racist abuse, Bayern released a statement in support of their Coman game. It read: "FC Bayern strongly condemns racist comments towards Kingsley Coman.

"The FC Bayern family is behind you, King. Racism has no place in sport or in our society."
