Gordon Brown attacked Donald Trump by castigating the "aggressive nationalism" that is taking over the world.

The former Labor prime minister accused Mr Trump - who is trying to become US president again - of exploiting Americans and scapegoating. Mr Brown, speaking at the Dunfermline Outwith Festival, said Mr Trump told voters "you have to blame immigrants, you have to blame black people, you have to blame China, you have to blame". someone" for the decline in living standards.

He added, "What Trump is really exploiting is the feeling that people have lost, and giving the impression that he's going to 'make America great again.' He continued, “It’s happening everywhere and the world is kind of turning in on itself. What you need are leaders willing to stand up to that and willing to say, "We can't blame everybody for our problems." ... We have to solve our problems ourselves.”

The former prime minister was promoting his book Permacrisis: A Plan to Fix a Fractured World, which hits bookstore shelves on September 28.
