This is the last haunting photo of a 16-year-old girl moments before she was thrown and killed by the horse she is seen on.

Thais Pereira Rodrigues rode his father's horse in a cowboy tournament at the family farm in Granja, Ceara state, Brazil, on July 10.

The farm had held a vaquejada event, where a pair of wranglers ride a bull as close as they dare.

But moments after his mother took the picture, the horse got scared and rushed to the forest with Thais still in the saddle.

Her mother ran after the animal, but she found her daughter lying unconscious among the trees a few minutes later.

The teenager, who was an only child and had a passion for animals, was taken to an urgent care unit, but died from serious head injuries.

She was buried on Monday.

Thais was an only child and loved animals, his family said.

She was taking a technical course in agriculture and had great plans for the future.

His school said, "We extend our condolences to his family and friends for the irreparable loss."
